Spiderman’s Moral Code: Spiderman has a “no kill” policy when it comes to fighting criminals. So do a lot of today’s superheroes. Luckily, in PR, we don’t have to deal with such serious moral codes, but we do need to live by certain ethics. The Public Relations Society of America has actually created a code of ethics, which includes honesty, loyalty, and fairness. Honesty is a big one for Super Clients as you never want to get caught telling a lie to the media. If you do, the reputation of your Entertainment PR company will be ruined forever. On the flip side, one of the quickest ways to get good press is to be known as someone who is a straight shooter, and who delivers what they promise.

Deadpool’s Humor: Although Deadpool’s got a morbid sense of humor that’s not becoming of a Super Client, there are still lessons to be learned from his comedy style. He obviously doesn’t take himself too seriously and that’s a quality we can embrace. Taking the work seriously while using self-deprecating humor is a killer combo.

Wolverine’s Claws: Use Wolverine’s claws to slice-and dice your budget. Analyze and break it down into manageable pieces so you know exactly what you are paying for with your agency. Some firms bill by the hour; some on monthly retainer; and others by project. Regardless, they should be able to give you an itemized report of your fees and expenses. Most PR budgets start in the range of $3,000 – $5,000 a month; larger agencies usually start much higher. The average contract is usually three, six or 12 months depending on the scope of work. Do the math and you’re looking at a minimum of $10,000 in fees. That doesn’t include expenses like printing, media meals and entertainment, clipping services, and the like, so be sure you are financially ready to hire an Entertainment PR company. And do this before you start talking to agencies; it’s rude to waste their time if you don’t have the budget.
